Who We Are
Sojourner Truth House (STH) is a community resource and day center for homeless and at-risk women and children. STH was founded in 1997 by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ to meet the needs of the underserved in Gary and Lake County, Indiana. Sisters from the Congregation of St. Agnes joined the effort later. As a ministry sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, STH is an outreach to the community that expresses the same core values: Openness to the Spirit, Community, Simplicity and Dignity and Respect for all. Poor Handmaid ministry has been active in Northwest Indiana since the 1900, and has focused on helping the poor, the sick, and children. While the outward form of ministry has changed through the years, the core focus on helping the poor, the marginalized and the underserved has remained constant. Sojourner Truth House carries on the mission in several ways; first, by providing case management and advocacy for homeless women and their children; a Clothes Closet for women, and a Food Pantry for the local community.
Sojourner Truth House staff includes Sisters from the Poor Handmaids and the Congregation of St. Agnes, social workers, administrative and support services.
