We welcome Kristy Olsen to the Sojourner Truth House team as Volunteer Coordinator. Kristy comes to us from Nazareth Home where she served as both their volunteer coordinator and as a midnight shift foster parent aide. Before coming to work for the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, Kristy’s professional experience was in Education. Kristy resided in Arizona where she graduated from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor degree in Art Education. She also studied urban landscape drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago. Kristy spent nine years teaching elementary art in the public schools. Prior to that she taught a wide range of ages, as young as preschool while she was assistant director in a preschool learning center, up to age twenty-two when she worked as a high school reading teacher, assisting students with learning disabilities, to learn to read so that they could graduate high school.

Kristy is most proud of the five years she spent caring for her Grandmother. This difficult decision required her to leave Arizona, give up teaching, and move back to Illinois to move in with, and become a full time care giver to her, then ninety-seven year old grandmother. Kristy continued this care for her grandmother until her final age of 102 years and 363 days. These years were filled with plenty of laughs and love. They were often a test of patience dealing with a loved one with dementia, but above all taught the importance of prayer and trusting in Jesus.

Kristy and her husband still reside in South Holland, IL. They enjoy taking road trips, attempting to visit all fifty states, and visiting their beloved family cottage in Grand Junction, MI.
